An award recognising the abilities and achievements of special education students was unveiled at the annual Special Awards Presentation Ceremony yesterday.
The Lee Kuan Yew Exemplary Student Award honours students in government-funded special education (Sped) schools who rise above their disabilities.
The 20 Sped schools in Singapore, such as Pathlight School for the autistic and Singapore School for the Deaf, will be able to nominate at least one student per year for the award, starting next year.

The Awqaf and Minors Affairs Foundation (AMAF) has donated Dh200,000 to the National Charity Schools to help alleviate the plight of parents burdened by financial stress as they provide for students in low income households.
Fahad Al Bannai, Head of Endowment Way-outs Section at AMAF, handed over the cheque to Dr Kamal Farhat, General Manager of the National Charity Schools at the AMAF headquarters in Dubai on Last week.

Indian blue-collar workers in the UAE can achieve their dream of good education to their children back in India, thanks to an initiative launched by a leading money transfer brand. Xpress Money, in partnership with Dubai-based NGO SmartLife, has launched the initiative titled 'SmartSapna' to offer education support for the children of blue collar workers employed in the UAE.
The initiative is spearheaded by Xpress Money's Corporate Social Responsibility platform H.O.P.E. (Helping Our People and Environment) and strengthens its seven-year long collaboration with SmartLife to improve workers' lives.

The Uttar Pradesh government will bear the cost of books and study material for about 30,000 students of the economically weaker sections enrolled in UP schools under the Right to Education Act. Under the new scheme, expected to be announced within the next fortnight, the government will spend an amount of Rs 5,000 per student in an academic year.
The scheme, which assumes political significance in the light of the impending polls in Uttar Pradesh, was recommended to the state government, sources told TOI, by activist and Magsaysay awardee Sandeep Pandey. After a presentation on how it would benefit students from the economically weaker sections, the scheme was sanctioned by chief minister Akhilesh Yadav and primary education minister Ahmed Hasan.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has said that the State Government will bear all educational expenses of talented daughters on taking admission in medical, engineering courses or joining IIT or IIM like institutions if their parents are not income tax payees. There would be 33 per cent reservation for girls in Government jobs, he added.
Chouhan was distributing the maiden Ladli Laxmi Scholarship to eligible daughters who have joined sixth standard. Minister for Women and Child Development Archana Chitnis presided over the function at CM House.
